Hall of Fame Award

Basil Ashman, a native of Eaglehawk, was a dedicated family man with an exceptional ability to excel in nearly everything he undertook. At age 25, he became the youngest person to lead and coach his beloved Eaglehawk team to the Bendigo Football Netball League (BFNL) championship in 1957, having previously contributed to the Borough's 1953 premiership victory.

Later honored with a lifetime membership in the BFNL, Basil was also inducted into its Hall of Fame and recognized as vice-captain in Eaglehawk's team of the century. His athletic talents extended beyond football—he was also a skilled cricketer and golfer.

In addition to his sports achievements, the Ashman name is widely recognized through Ashman’s menswear and dry-cleaning services, where Basil was a successful managing director. He also served as a director for the Bendigo Football League under Dick Turner’s leadership, contributing to Victoria’s first independent football league, which predated the VFL.

The Bendigo Sports Star Basil Ashman Hall of Fame acknowledges local champions of yesteryear, and serves as an inspiring reminder of the achievements and esteem in which these athletes are held as part of sporting history.
